I am looking for European movie or tv mysteries. I have recently been watching the German made Donna Leon Brunetti mysteries, The English, German and Swedish Wallender mysteries. I have watched all the Foyle's War mysteries, The inspector Lyndley series, Wire in the Blood, the Inspector lewis mysteries.

    Recommendations are appreciated.

I can highly recommend Bron/Broen http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1733785/ although I'm nor sure that is a 'mystery' but I guess it is.

And the IMDB rating speaks for itself.

    Karim,

Thanks, I am already searching Netflix. I find the European films to be far superior to American.

in italy all the movies and tv series are dubbed (I hope to have used the right word, I mean that all films are translated from the original language in italian), therefore I'm not sure that the italian titles are the exact translation of the originals. if you liked the "wallander" series, you'll probably like also "beck" and "loro uccidono" ("they kill", but as I said the original title may be different), which are a swedish and a danish series. an english series done very well is "body farm: corpi di reato" ("body of evidence"), another english series that I liked is "la legge di murphy" ("murphy's law"). I've also watched two interesting french mystery series: "spiral" and "jo". recently I've watched a good film, "millennium. uomini che odiano le donne" ("millennium. men who hate women", I think this should be the original title). you should take a look also to some old italian films directed by dario argento, ("suspiria", "phenomena", etc.) very appreciable, if you think that these films were done in the seventies.

I started a series called "The Eagle" last night. I am not sure where it was made. There are 8 episodes in each series. There are 3 series. Each series runs about 8 hours and is one story. I stream everything off of Netflix. They use subtitles. I am also watching an American made series from years ago called "X Files". There are 200 plus 45 minute episodes for you science fiction buffs. When it is just me I use subtitles on everything, even all the British stuff. Some of those accents are like a foreign language.

I looked for "The Bridge" on Netflix with no luck. I will try the post you referred to. What I did find was an American movie by the same name. It seems someone mounted a camera on the Golden Gate Bridge and recorded people trying to commit suicide by jumping into San Francisco Bay. I think I will skip that one.

I've watched all the episodes of "X-Files" and also the movie (I don't remember the title of the x-files'movie, but I think that it's easy to find also in the web).
if you like british movies you should look for the peter greenaway's films (they are not mysteries, but are all wonderful films). then, one of the most strange movie I've ever seen is "leningrad cowboys go to america", directed by aki kaurismäki, really nice.

    Guido,

I will look for everything you recommend. Keep the suggestions coming. We started the Netflix version of "House of cards", last night. I will probably watch the British original from the 70's also.

    guido,

Did you follow the "Fringe" series. I stopped watching weekly years ago, the commercials drove me batty. I do Netflix it, great science fiction. I am waiting for the final season to come out on discs.

netflix is not working in italy, but there are many sites that let you to watch series and film (often also in the original languages). I've never watched "fringe", also a friend of mine has told me to watch that series, I think I should do it sometime.

If you want a real European mystery, just pick up a business newspaper and read about the Eurozone and how it/they think...like with the Cyprus deal. That's mysterious...

I don't know if you've watched the original Swedish movie versions of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and the sequels? I can highly recommend those too.

    VickeyP,

I have read the books, watched the American version of Dragon Tattoo, the Swedish editions of all three, and the extended Swedish versions (appx. 3 hours/film). Highest recommendations on all. The extended versions were the best.

    Guido,

I have been following this story on 10-15 news programs from all over the world. The Russian news "RT" seems to have the best spin at this point, but who knows. Russian capital is heavily invested in Cypress. The only thing we can count on, is that the resolution will not help normal people at all.

My wife and I watched a Masterpiece contemporary movie last night called "Page Eight". We thought it was excellent and had a powerful cast.

"The Whistleblower" is not a European movie, but a Canadian movie, I believe. Excellent! It is about UN Peacekeepers complicit in sex trafficking in Bosnia. This is not a comedy. Based on true events.

"The Reader" was filmed in Germany and is an excellent holocaust genre film. Kate Winslet (sp) won an award for her role. Excellent, but I do not know if it was a European production.

My wife and I thought the American movie "Sessions" was excellent, a true story.

"13 Assassins" is a remake of a 60's Japanese movie. Excellent head lopping and well acted. I streamed it on Netflix. Loosely historical.

"Dragon" is a Hong Kong-Chinese action martial arts film directed by Peter Chan. It has 15 film award nominations with 7 wins in mostly Asian film festivals. I streamed this on Netflix. Excellent photography and story with excellent action choreography.

Highly recommend the movie Robot and Frank. [url]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1990314/[url]. Great acting, and the script shows great insight in 'human' relations.

" City of Life and Death " is a highly decorated Chinese release from 2008-2009. It is about the rape of Nanking during the 2nd Sino-Japanese war. The movie was lightly censored by the Chinese government. Check Wikipedia for more details. Excellent, but not for the squeamish.

"The White Ribbon" is a German production about small village just before WW1. It won the Palme D'or at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. It is a black and white production that was filmed in color and then had the color deleted. Black and white film was not available.

"When the last sword is drawn" was made in 2003 and won best picture in the 2004 Japan Film Awards. It is loosely historical about the end of feudal society in Japan at the end of the 19th century.

"Beneath Hill 60" is an Australian war film about an Australian Mining Regiment in World War 1. Excellent true story based on memoirs of one of the participants.

"Amour" is the 2012 Palme d'or best picture award winner. It also won the Academy Awards best foreign film award. Check Wikipedia for a summary. Excellent film on a very serious subject, growing old.

"Poetry" was the 2010 Grand Belle picture of the year. I would call it a A minus rather than an A plus, and not for everyone. I debated whether to post it, but decided that I would. Check Wikipedia for a write up.

"Cloud Atlas" by Lana and Andy Wachowski follows in the vein of the "Matrix" and "V". I do not know if it should be considered European, it was filmed in Europe. Science fiction enthusiasts will enjoy this film. Check Wikipedia for a write up.

    Helen.

I really liked both of those series. Check out "The Hour". There are two seasons available.

Couldn't find "The Hour" on Netflix streaming...I started watching "Luther" last night, BBC, one season only I think, first episode somewhat interesting, not hooked though like I was with the other two. Really liked "Breaking Bad" and "The Bridge" was pretty good. Loved "House of Cards" , can't wait for next season. Oh, and "The Killing " is really good too, three seasons. Wish there were more good series out there.
