By now everyone likely knows about the ESA rear shock recall on the new R1200RT. But here are some facts that I wasn't aware of: According to an article in the October issue of Motorcyclist magazine, the ESA shock is made by a company called Tenneco, which is the parent company of the Monroe and Marzocchi brands, among others. The problem appears to be the result of a manufacturing error. "The shock shaft, where the damping piston is threaded on, was breaking at the last thread". The problem was first brought to BMW's attention when two customer bikes in Europe broke their shocks. Tenneco was able to consistently repeat the failure on the bench. So they immediately notified BMW, who responded with the ESA shock recall. Approximately 8000 bikes are affected worldwide.

Plus to make matters worse they grounded the bikes before a fix was signed off, must have cost Tenneco an absolute fortune, they'll be picking up the tab.

Bummer for all of those RT buyers who invested heavily for an otherwise great bike. Yep, it probably will cost Tenneco a fortune. It would cost them even more if they didn't correct the matter and compensate BMW. By comparison, BMW will weather the storm. They will lose some customers, but by and large, they have a loyal following. Does anybody know if the repairs are already being done?

Repairs are currently being done, some have received their repaired bikes back. Apparently the problem shock is removed and returned to BMW HQ and returned for reinstall.
