Yesterday I received a large card in the mail offering a special deal on an Advantec oil change for my RS. Only $144.95 USD. What a deal! Let me see, $145 divided by 4 liters equals $36.25 per liter. Now, granted changing the oil at the shop might be worth half an hour ($60 at my shop's labor rate), but that still makes the oil cost $21.25 per liter, plus 9% sales tax.

That is pretty pricey oil, and changing your oil is something anyone can do if you buy a crush washer, torque wrench, nitrile gloves, and a few rags to mop up the usual oil splash that misses the bucket. While Advantec oil might be great stuff, I bet if you use any of the major motorcycle-approved synthetic or semi-synthetic oil brands, which typically cost about $8-$10 a liter less, you and your engine will never know the difference. And then of course, there is Shell Rotella T synthetic truck oil, which (I believe) comes in 5W-40 weight and you can buy a container of 4 liters of that stuff on sale for about what one liter of Advantec oil costs.

BTW, the oil change offer ends in just 60 days. While I have been riding my bike every chance I get (between riding my other 5 motorcycles ), that 60 day offer is going to expire long before I would have any interest in taking advantage of it. Time for a little recycling action.

Yup on Shell Rotella 15-40 Jaso MA rated.
BMW doesn't stand for Bring My Wallet fur nuthin'.
Conventional thinking is filter every other oil change and the oil change interval is 6K miles. Actually my Suzuki manual states that.

I was visiting my dealer today and discovered that the BMW Advantec oil, as used in the RS, sells for $13.50 a liter. So that isn't much of a sale. $145 for 4 bottles of oil and a $16 oil filter (which was not mentioned in the oil change promotion) seems to pencil out in the dealer's favor - even when you add in 30 minutes of labor (which is what it takes me to change my oil and filter).

Richard, I would go right back to that shop and ask, no demand, that they change your oil every 3 months. It is the right thing to do... For them, for you, and for America.

Seems this is a deal BM did with Shell as it covers 4 wheels too. Started with Castrol then Mobil now Shell. Because Shell use fracked shale gas its base isn't crude oil or a synthetic ester. But the engine only needs a quality lubrication. And a change after 6k isn't as long as the 18k in cars. Tell you when it happens.
