Sherpa Ted is confirmed! Details are in the first post in this thread. It looks to be a great alternative for folks who are looking to attend last minute, and for those who want to sort-of rough it.

You can do it Gerry! Take that Friday off through the weekend.
    That's what I'm doing.
Leave early Friday morning and take Rt 78 over to Rt 81.
My brother and I could meet you somewhere over by Harrisburg or Carlisle, Pa. and travel with you the rest of the way.
We often ride like our asses are on fire though.
Then we leave Sunday after breakfast.
    Woo hoo!

dammit, if I were home in Toledo, I'd try to head out. Of course, I'd need my bike too

I've never ridden more than 50 miles in a day. I really want to experience riding 300 miles in a day on interstates. Would my lowered S handlebars make me cramp up?

When I read this I thought of ACHY, or Gregg, who rode down to the rally last year on his F800S from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin....in one day!
    He seemed fine.
I hope Gregg makes it again this year.
BTW Toby - Gregg also has a HM....well, at least he did last time I saw him.
It would be so cool if you could make it, even if it's in a cage with your wife and baby.
    Do it!

Riding 300 miles a day on interstates sucks. Riding 300 miles in a day on backroads is where the fun is at!

You are tempting me...after I replied that evening I checked Streets & Trips and did not seem so bad a ride if i left early. I may work on the wife to break out.

Sad to say That I will be attending the MotoGP this year during the rally. I really enjoyed the rally last year and hoped to go again this year. Hope it turns out well. Rob deserves a lot of credit for doing a great job on the rally, maybe next year there will not be a scheduling conflict and I'll be able to join you again. I hope you all have a good safe rally!

    No more singles left BTW.
I have been looking for a track and date that I could make to take my second level course at California Superbike school. One of my days was rained out earlier this month at Sears Point. Turns out they are at VIR on Aug 31rst.
Come down to the rally....head south on the Sunday and do a little riding around VIR.....I like the sound of that

It's not simply the question of handle bars it's the whole interstate experience.

I lose the will to live after an hour on a freeway. My hands go numb, my arse goes numb, my neck aches - I think my brain shuts down and from there on extremities and vital organs follow suit.

I can ride eight hours on a good or indifferent road and feel fine after it. Three hours on a road passes like it was half an hour sometimes - half an hour on a freeway feels like three hours.

I'm not sure if I have a stall in the stable or not. I emailed the hotel about a week ago but never got a reply.

My guess is you'll get more immediate results if you call them directly.
It wouldn't surprise me if they forget to check their e-mail.
I had to try and call more than once before they answered.
You have to make it...I need to sample some of the Three Mile Island chili!
Then again, I may be naturally endowed with radioactive seasoning since I was there covering the story that week in 1979.

Are you talking about Boyer Station? When I called the woman told me that there were no more singles left...so I booked a double.
If anybody wants to switch... please let me know.

If things fill up, be aware that 23 miles away by the mountain route (US 219), or 29 miles by the valley route (WV28), is the Old Clark Inn in Marlinton, run by Andrea and Nelson who ride. Their Inn caters to motorcyclists but not overtly so, is comfortable in the B&B sense. It is a bargain with breakfast, but be sure to book it with a full hot breakfast.

If you go this route, you might want to give them a heads up that this is the F800 group and more might be calling. They will book the entire inn at a discount. http://www.oldclarkinn.com

I called to reserve a camping space and they told me that "we" rented the entire campground and therefore I should have no problem. I am looking forward to this, as it will be the second time I've camped in about 20 years. The first time will be at the BMW rally in TN, where I'll spend all my vendor's money at the F800depot I'm sure...

I presume you'd be crossing in the Niagara/Buffalo area, although I can't remember this morning where Thornbury is. The country gets interesting south along the Lake Erie shoreline, and the ride down to Pittsburgh could be fun for this Florida guy (and I hope to do it in reverse after the rally). But maybe Rob in Pittsburgh could recommend a great route from there to WV. I explored only a little of it after last year's meet in Buchanon VA, and am glad to get the chance to see more of it this year.

Sounds great. A short ride over from Augusta County. I hope it's OK to come on my mini-F800 (aka F650GS).

Hey Judy, I may be going down with the wife. We'd be leaving from Innisfil (Barrie), so we can easily group ride down.

Of course there may be more coming from our area.

    Cheers

I'll call tomorrow and check but thought someone might know.

Is anyone riding from CT or NYC area? Curious if I can get any suggestions on a more scenic route to Cass, rather than just all-highway.

I am heading out from Central NJ and meeting up with Luxamor and others in PA... I would be mostly highways from NJ to our meeting spot in PA though. I would head out early on Friday if all goes to plan.

If you want to join up in NJ we can meet-up.

    Attention!

I am prepared to book the entire Old Clark Inn if there is sufficient demand. The cost will average about $35 per night per person with hot breakfast (depending on room and based on double occupancy), plus tax.* There will be savings for all of us, and we get hot breakfast instead of continental buffet. Available are:

6 queen beds & private bath
1 twin beds & private bath (already reserved for 3 nights)
2 twin beds & shared bath
2 single beds & shared bath

This is a very cool place to stay, and the owners are motorcycle people. Check out motorcycle friendly.

I must hear from you quickly before innkeepers Nelson and Andrea start booking "strangers" into the rooms. Send an email to fredh (a^t) paonline (d?t) com ASAP!!

This can be done for either Thursday or Friday night through Saturday night, with checkout on Sunday morning. I will also arrange a barbeque one night (not in conflict with Cass event) in the back of the Inn with the outdoor fire, so we can imbibe and not ride.

    Fred

*Terms: Entire Inn at $565 per night for 20 people, plus $5 for hot breakfast, plus tax. Compare regular rates. There is an adjacent facility owned by another innkeeper with four doubles and shared bath.

Given that I have no housing and was thinking I'd be forced to camp--no offense, I've done enough camping for several life times and try never to do it when riding--this sounds great. I'm sending an email.

Is the distance close enough that will allow us to take in fully any and all night time activities?

Sorry that I'm just getting things fixed in my head...so there is absolutely no housing available (except for camping) at the site of the event? No cancellations? Is there a waiting list? Gosh, I better get myself in gear...I didn't know if I could make it but looks like I can now.

I have stayed at Fred's recommended Old Clark Inn as a biker and it is good. They have a great hot breakfast that'll carry you into the afternoon. Free hi-speed WiFi if you need it for your toys -and- free use of their desktop PC if you need to get your webmail or even make a post here. All worth much more than what they charge for the room!! A walk to the restaurant across the street for good food at a good price. Their waitresses were pretty nice people too.

I'll be rooming with FredRydr, whom I have known from past 2 wheel gatherings. Arriving Thursday late afternoon, leaving Sunday noon. I'm 501 miles and 8 hours away and will truck my new bike, tools, food, jumper cables and 17" laptop the very boring, center tire wearing slab ride. All, so when I finally get there my 62 year old bones won't be in pain and overtaxed for the next 2 days riding. I'll also reluctantly have the default rescue vehicle, my 2 wheel drive (it's a lower bed than a 4x4) Frontier KingCab, should anyone need one for anything besides SBDS, that's fixable with a multiman push start.

It's in the mountains, so even late August won't be too hot. I want to ride with the guys who have less than ½" wide chicken strips.

Goodness no! This is just a very cool place to stay if you ride a motorcycle. Thanks to Rob for putting the rally near it.
