I used to own a 1991 K100RS. It was a great bike and I rode it for 62,000 miles and never even had to change the brake pads. Unfortunately, it broke it's Paralever shaft drive around 45K miles, which set me back over $1200 to repair. It was very top heavy and the stock rear suspension was very much overwhelmed by the mass of the bike, however it felt like it would run forever (well at least the engine did - the shaft drive didn't). In 2002 I traded the bike to my Yamaha dealer and purchased a new 1000cc FZ1. I still have this bike and it is just wonderful. Much like the K-RS, but 100 pounds lighter and it has just fantastic suspension. It handles better than any bike that I have ever owned and gets 50 mpg on regular.

The poor Yamaha dealer just could not sell that K-bike because its mileage was way more than their customers were willing to accept in a used bike. Eventually, after 18 months on the showroom floor, their service manager bought the bike from the shop and used it to commute from the Sacramento Valley to San Francisco every day. He told me that he just loved the bike as it was extremely fast and reliable. I haven't seen him or the K100RS for the past couple of years. Based upon seeing the bikes at the shop, my guess is that it has been crashed and maybe turned into a "street fighter".

Yes, the K motors do go forever (while the rest of the bike slowly falls apart around it). Mine was a '92 K100RS (4 valve). It carried me 116,000 miles, and when I traded it in for a nominal amount to get a F800ST one of the people who worked at the shop snapped it up as a daily rider. It's still doing well, I hear. Very reliable bike. When it had problems they always gave warning: worn out U joint on the driveshaft at 60,000; spark plug wire problems; and at 100,000 the rear main seal gave out and slowly oiled up my clutch plates. Services were quite a bit more expensive than the F800 though.

Here's a couple of smaller Bricks.

These are my 2 K75S's. The bike in the front of the picture has now covered 188,000 miles with me since I bought it new in 1989. Mainly two up touring, holidays and club runs. I still use it occasionally when the weather's bad, salt on the roads etc.
The bike at the back was bought about '5th-hand' as a stand-by machine and I sold it on after I aquired the F800 'new toy'.
I love the smoothness of the 'K' triple and its relaxed gait but the 'rush' of the F800, its better brakes and handling combined with fantastic fuel economy puts it in favourite place.

I've thought about getting an old triple. The Flying Brick is really a remarkable and unique engine (how many inline fours lie on their side??). It really was uniquely BMW, but the weight really killed it. The vibration of the 4 cylinder as well.

A K75 would really just be a toy, with an F800 in the garage though.

just to wake this tread up a little I am on my second K100rs first bought new in 1985 400,000 odd thousand km's until sold, second, 1986 second hand 135,000km now 237,000km, yes they vibrate through the bars and they are heavy but fill the tank and go! I used to live in high country Australia and there wasn't many bikes could keep pace on the Snowy Mountains Highway(my road), predictable is the handling although they will eat front tyres if pushed 2,300km out of a laser me33 was the worst, all kinds of hidey holes under the seat and rear ducktail, full tool kit, puncture repair kit and first aid kit unlike my F800ST, f%% all nooks and crannies almost no tools, but what a sweet handling bike it stops, go's and turns and you can buy tyres for it......still like the K, it might become a trike or swing a chair, towing a trailer as a rally truck!

I have to say it looks better in the pic than real life. But it is 27 years new.......

A fine design, I had forgotten how narrow the bars are, and the weight, all forgiven on the move....

    Just like an airbrushed model....

Very happy with it Stephen, I did a 360km loop last Saturday, to visit the girl down the farm and the old girl (mum). A tick over 20L fuel so just about 5.7L/100km. Reading the manual: Fuel consumption according to ISO DIS 7860 standard at a steady 120km/h is 5.7l/100km or 50 mpg in the old imperial money.
So considering I did quite a bit of 'testing', including top speed and was for about 80km of the trip cruising at between 140 to 160km/h I declare this K run in.
I am not sure how many 27 year old vehicles would exceed the specifications published in their original handbook......
This is also the smoothest K100 I have ridden, very little buzziness at all, heavy in the shed, but once above walking pace, light and neutral.
I could go on and on, but suffice to say
Having a small issue with the payout, so I'm holding off the F for the moment, (sorry, please don't bannish me) and will just enjoy the K for a while.

    God these things are 'built'
The hard cases also had the genuine inner bags, and are keyed alike to the bike

Kia ora Trev, I had forgotten how much these things had to offer.
This has a tyre combination I have not tried before, an Arrowmax 501F on the front and a Lazertech on the rear. Back in the day I was fond of the K701F K700 dunlop radial combo, and not all to happy on my recent one with the BT45's that seem to be in favour.......

it would be touching 30 now.........My first K00RS had over 430,000km on it when sold, the other, in the yard has 238,000km indicated, so more than that... speedo issues...
