I see you must have done an upgrade last night Halfpint. It's caused mayhem in the rankings/points system - it has affected absolutely everyone it seems. I'm just pointing it out just in case it hasn't been noticed by other forum members.

Points are of no matter. All of us are pretty rank so that doesn't matter either.

The only thing I worry about is if I can get online here. The points don't matter to me.

You may not like the points system, but it was set up by Rob the creator/previous owner 10yrs ago and it's still here so unless there's a movement to get rid of it - the new owners have a duty to maintain it until such time. I found it an interesting sideline when I first joined, now that I've joined the level 100 clan it has little meaning for me - but I still cast an eye.

terry, it isn't that I don't like the points system, it is just that it isn't important to me.

I was a moderator on one of the largest motorcycle forums with almost 9000 posts. I'm still probably the #2 top contributor to the site, even though I haven't been on in years. Does it get me anything? No. If they erased all my points, would I lose sleep over it? Nope. It just isn't important to me.

What was and is important, is getting on the forum. Reading what others have contributed, and if I can, adding to those contributions. If I get points for helping others, great. If not, no big deal.

The problem with the current points based system is that you can amass lots of points by posting jokes, word games and other side issues. Whilst those who contribute knowledge and help alone will never get far.

Even though I'm near the top of the tree, I'd still ditch the points system as it is, or weigh it so a HofW entry is worth a lot more than a word quiz entry.

My post was to highlight to Admin there was a problem which now seems to have escalated to a like/dislike points discussion. RevKen even disliked it for some reason, I was only stating a fact.

You may not think it - but ultimately I really couldn't give a toss about points - but they are there - I didn't invent them. Pat, I ride and enjoy my ST but I don't know the first thing about bikes and am not interested in the mechanics of motorcycling therefore would have difficulty in writing about it. And the jokes, I had thousands of them accumulated on my hard drive, and many not funny at all but some of the remaining jokes I've shared in the "Worst jokes" section for better or worse. And why shouldn't this forum be for everyone, our common thread is that we all like/own an F800 of some description.

    I'll leave it there

Terry your input is welcomed as is everyone else's.

The point I was making is that the bar graph under everyone's name is useless in every respect. As you yourself said, few people give a toss about points (and the associated graph), so if they are causing software issues, let's ditch them.

    Points add up?
Like Sally Field said when she finally got an Oscar. "You really like Me"
Yeah and 5 dollars will get you a latte at Starbucks.
That kind of recognition is useless.
Likes and Quotes seem more of a pertinent measure since it's the fellow members making that decision.

Running a re-sync tool to see if it makes a difference.

Just to confirm, are the points numbers off, or is it how they are awarded off?

Kevin I think they are all to pot.

My current points total shows I have 208% of the required points for the next level!!

Wow young Terrence, you have most certainly stirred up a hornets nest, just ask a very simple question to HalfPint, and you get an immediate dislike, at least rev ken could have put his reasoning down as to why, now that is in its self is off, that is why I have countered it with a like.

There are those of us, that have stated above there views on this issue of points. However which way one looks at this points bar, it is an indication to the approx level one is at. There may well be many around who consider this as a pointer to where they are, these may well be newbees, Daboo is one of a few who it does not bother him, that is fair enough, his own preference and nothing wrong in that.

It makes not one jot of difference whether you collect points just by posting jokes, the same can be said with the word association, of which I have noted some of the top points persons have used this to gain extra points, which may I add is no bad reflection at all. Some including myself post tech items etc, and some only post them as they are interested in anything technical.

When all is said and done, the points is a guide only, it is a bit like MARMITE, you either love it or dislike it.

Anyway, thanks Terry for bringing this issue to the fore, at least one person is keeping tabs on the ship............... oy mind that bloody ice berg some one . . . OOps

Thanks Kevin, the rankings at the moment don't bear any relation to the points achieved, you could be on level 100 but appear on page 80+ with just one point, there are other anomalies. I seemed have ruffled a few feathers so under the circumstances I shall now take ten steps back from this discussion.

The whole experience point system is a little unfamiliar to me, but I found some other recounting tools and general re-syncing abilities that I'm gonna try.

Now that the rebuild tool I ran before is done, notice any differences?

I've just had a private email from WildWilly saying that he's been locked out of the F800 site as it doesn't recognise his password and asking for Richards help in this matter. I had a similar problem last year and it required Verticalscopes team to sort it out so I will send him their direct email address.

You can't depend upon me to solve any computer issues. I am just keeping my fingers crossed that something like that doesn't happen to me as I wouldn't have a clue what to do about it. I still don't know how to use the smart phone that my daughter gave me for emergency use while riding my motorcycle in the boondocks. When I do need to make a call I can't get any sort of signal and there is never anyone around to show me what buttons to push to make a phone call. My favorite phone continues to be my 40-year old Snoopy push button landline telephone located next to my bed where it is convenient to hang up on robo-call nightmares while I am sleeping.

Hopefully Guido will be able to sort out Willy's problem.

Maybe Richards is not able to solve technical problems, but he is an insuperable moderator... a real nightmare for the spammers.

Tried again to post a picture and failed - have the techs noted the problem yet or are there other issues they are grappling with?

probably they are still working on the problems of the forum. I suppose that also the tech staff has the weekend off, as everybody else, I know, it's annoying, but we must wait the next week.
just to know it... my account doesn't keep the access, I need to log in again every time I open the forum page.

I perfectly understand Guido, they probably manage many other forum/websites. Is it only in the past few days that you've lost automatic access? Since the other day when they upgraded to https every time I move from one page to another I get the banner at the bottom telling me 'only secure content is displayed', I only need telling the once. I wonder if there's a way of bypassing that?

I've never seen a banner like that, nobody told me that I'm secure in the web, and anyway I don't believe it. as I'm not secure in the daily life... why I should be secure wandering around the web?
"peligro! peligro!" (danger!) I'm used to say in Spanish to Pina (my dog) and she ignore it, so why should I care?

you are right about the fact that the tech staff have to manage many fora, the company that owns this forum, owns a lot of forum, I can't imagine how they do their job, don't forget that I belong to the past century, when if you wanted to speak to a friend you were used to go to him and knock on his door.

maybe it depends on the settings of your browser (and that shows all my ignorance of the matter ). I've seen the screen shot and it's the first time that I see this kind of warning, if you cannot cancel it in your preferences I'll tell to the VS admin staff of the problem. please, let me know.

Thanks Guido, I got my wife to Google the question and have now sorted it. It wasn't just this site but others so - at least something has been achieved today.

I am assuming that the problem relating to posting pictures isn't just confined to the 'general discussions' section?

no, the pictures problem concerns the whole forum. I'm sure that the tech staff will solve it as soon as possible.

    Hey there,

After the site was moved to the cloud, this was one of the issues that we encountered.
We're aware of this issue and the tech team is looking into it.
We'll keep you posted here once it is resolved.

    So sorry for the inconvenience,

    Ed

Can you tell me if you see the SSL certificate in place right before this happens? Does the URL of the site say "secure" and have "https" at the front of it?

On my desktop Windows 7 Firefox browser, I see a green padlock symbol and an "https" before the f800riders.org address.

sorry, but I don't know where to look for the SSL certificate, but the site has the right URL: https and the locK icon at the front in every page of the site.

I don't know https from a deep hole in the ground but I appreciate all that is being done to fix this temporary glitch. A big thank you to all who keep this great site up and running. Your work, time and dedication are what makes this BMW world turn.

Sounds like something is going on between the site’s cookies and the SSL cert. In the meantime, I’d suggest checking your browser settings to make sure that nothing has been changed there that would cause cookies to be cleared too often. Then, I would clear your browser’s cache and cookies and then try logging into the site again (make sure to select the “Remember Me” box if you wish to stay logged in).

Please ket us know if this continues to be an issue.

    Cheers,

    Erik

thanks Erik, the problem has been solved simple adding a "s" at the end of "http"(that one was the problem) in the URL saved in the bookmarks and, as you also suggested, clearing the cache of the browser, now seems that everything works.
often the simplest solution is the last one which we think
