Tank Bag Repair

So my tank bag is beginning to wear. Nothing serious. I'd just like to keep it from getting worse.

What do you suggest?

I don't know if anything can really be done about it.

Find your local cobbler,I bring all my bike related things to the lil old shoemaker.

That's a tricky area. Multiple layers of thick material, seams and high wear area.

Unless you have access to a commercial sewing machine, in not sure a DIY fix will last.

My solution with tears (and just about everything else) is to glue them. Gorilla Glue will fix the problem, although it might not look so great. My experience is that cobblers are a dying breed. The last time I tried to have a pair of motorcycle shoes resoled, the cobbler said that he only repairs cowboy boots and wouldn't work on anything that didn't have stitched soles. Now that shop is long gone. I don't think anyone repairs shoes anymore in the Bay Area. People just go out and buy a new pair.

I was thinking glue myself. Maybe if I could find some kind of black tube that I could split open and then lay it over the areas that are wearing?

I put a tie wrap or a bit of wire to keep the zipper from going into the loose area.

I found over the years that tank bags just wear out. Dang the bad luck!

Too funny!

We have received a fairly large IRS refund from our previous year's taxes. So I asked my wife if I could use it to buy another motorcycle.

Her reply..."NO".

So I guess I'll work on finding some way to protect the tank bag for now.

May I suggest Sugru? For the cloth area rub a small amount into the fabric and let it cure. After that you can continue with the repair of the other materials. Sugru sticks to about everything and stays pliable. Their website has great suggestions for fixing anything. I repaired parts of the tank bag on my 2007 F650 GS. It's still going strong.

You could try a shoe repair (as mentioned) or an auto upholstery shop. I have used both. They have the needed sewing machines and work in leather and heavy materials.

Alternatively, I found a guy on the ADVrider site who repairs motorcycle riding gear and bags. He is in CT. I could find his info and send to you. He repaired some riding pants for me a couple years back. New zipper and tear repair. Reasonable price and good work. I can send you the link to the thread on that forum and you can see feedback from other and pics of the repairs he has done.

Mistake #1 ,don’t ask her.I found it’s easier to ask for forgiveness then to argue for two weeks about it.

Chris, I recommend you ride to Buffalo, Minnesota, and see Mary at "sew knotty" (website is sosewknotty dot com). She has done some repairs and some new functional design for me that were terrific. I found her though my local Indian moto shop, Bison Thunder.

You could also send her your bag, but riding there would be more fun.

I'm using Survival Series Tank Bag that I had ordered from Viking bags. After a month the grip of the magnetic base was getting lose. Their support assures me to replace it with the new one. A week ago I got the return label now waiting for the new one. Suggests you recontact to the brand from where you had ordered it.

I used some pliers and repaired the zipper. The fraying edges were easy to fix. I just trimmed off the loose threads and the plastic ribbing underneath is intact.
