Yah, The Sierra's are full of them. Not so much in So Cal mountains. Coastal ranges have some good stuff too.
Try the Auto Club for maps or Google Earth or Bing?

Chris, If that selection of roads doesn't wear out his bike, nothing will!

You can't throw a stick without hitting a great back road in Cal. Down south there are great roads between the coast and Palm Springs. South of I-10 and Hemet there is Tececula and Julian, all the way to the border. North of I-10 is Skyline and big Bear. To the west is Ojai and Highway 166, Hwy 58 to Paso Robles, Big Sur is great but slow. All of the Sierra Nevada Mts on both sides are great as are the roads north of Highway 80. Hwy 36 and Hwy 200 out of Redding to the coast are fantastic. Get a copy of the Butler Maps for California and they show all the great great roads by three different categories. But ride there if you can, you won't be disappointed.

Some roads look good on a map being squiggly and all but in person are a bit of a disappointment due to the traffic that prevails on them.
The Few in the San Gabriel Mountains are a PITA on week ends but pleasant during the week when the working folk aren't on them.
Helps to check with the Cal Trans site to check on construction and other road conditions.

This site covers the whole state and seems to be current even with traffic and accidents.

This great road runs through the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

And this is where gold was discovered in 1849. Lots of great small towns.

Might be some traffic on the weekends.

Up on the Northern end i got caught behind a cattle drive of cows and calves. Whole lot of fresh dung on the roadway. Took a while to get through and back in the clear.

I'm in the north end if L.A County. Tons of good curvy roads. Get a Butler Map of the area. It's easy to ride hundreds of miles without ever getting on a freeway (the F-word.)

Yah, we ride from Newcombs Ranch where we gather to Azalea campground in Sequoia Nat Park and have only a couple miles of freeway, 5 actually, since there is no alternative to get to Caliente/Bodfish road.
It's helpful to like twisty roads. Although there are a couple riders that get bike sick and sometimes take alternate straighter routes.

Yes I was referring to HWY 49.

I have not seen the road conditions you note above -- that would be an infrequent experience to be behind a cattle drive.
