The problem is that the testing, apparently, doesn't appear to respond to the testing until a couple of days after it is contagous.
That's right Steve, the latency period and the incubation period and the time of testing is a difficult thing for people to understand.
Trump couldn't figure out how Katie Miller could test "very good for a long period of time", then subsequently have a positive test.
Lets roll the transcript: "The tests are perfect, but something can happen between a test where it's good and then something happens and all of the sudden. She was tested very recently and tested negative, and then today I guess for some reason she tested positive."- DJ Trump.
Umm, she became infected is the "some reason". Duh.
Lets say someone cops a faceful of COVID cough. The clock starts. The virus gets breathed in and multiplies within the new person's cells. Within a few days there is enough virus being breathed out that a test swab (beautiful test) can collect enough for the test kit to read 'positive'. The clock is checked: the latency period has just been reached. The clock keeps going as the patient feels great, tremendous, despite the growing viral load they have on board. After a day or a couple of days or a few, maybe a week they get a sore throat or cough or fever or start snotting everywhere or any combination of those then the clock stops. That is the incubation period.
The difficult thing is easy to see. The difficult thing is just when does or did the person get the test?
If it was part of a pre-work daily mandatory test it is much more likely that a positive result will be returned after the latency period by definition but before the incubation period has been reached. In other words a perfectly well-feeling person may get a positive a number of days before they get sick. As we know, many people remain 'asymptomatic', so they may never get sick, but are still seen as positive.
Even with daily testing it can be seen that there are, say 23 hours of potential spread available between tests. If they get a test later in the incubation period or indeed well after the incubation period has been reached, then that is a big problem. Bring in the 'contact tracers', there is a lot of work to do now.
They were of course contagious from the moment the latency period was reached. They just didn't know it. Sorry Grandma.
Great description Peter, you couldn't have made it any clearer,. Maybe if some of the officials involved with communicating this to the public were as clear we wouldn't have over 4 million cases worldwide with 25% in the US that has 5% of the total world population,,!!
I heard more details regarding Harris's plan this morning. She wants every family making $120K or less to receive $2,000 a month for each family member and child up to three children. This money would be sent to everyone in the country until the virus has been defeated, the crisis is declared over and everyone is back to work. I also heard that she is the front-runner to be Biden's VP.
The talk show influencers are already starting to push her plan, or another plan like it, for a monthly government paycheck. Supposedly this would give people money to buy stuff and that would bring back the nation's economy. What no one talks about is that many people receiving a big check every month might not want to return to work as many businesses would not be able to pay them as much as a tax-free handout, which is what is happening right now in California with the combined state and federal virus unemployment insurance payouts.
Meanwhile, Trump is also kicking around a plan for another trillion dollar bailout. No doubt he is trying to decide what kind of plan would enhance his chances for reelection.
Not once has anyone even mentioned a possible plan for funding these free-money payouts or how the current and future trillions of dollars of deficits might be paid back (with interest) in the future. For some mysterious reason no one seems to want to use the words "taxes" and talk about the "children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren", who would be paying back the loans that the federal and state governments are taking out to pay for the bailouts.
One other interesting new item this morning from the local all-news radio station: San Francisco health officials tracked down some 11,700 travelers that passed through SFO after returning from China, Europe and Iran during the past couple of months and only found a small handful of passengers who tested positive for the virus.

Don't forget they already put in a seriously major tax cut two years ago that they said was going to generate GDP of 4 or 5 percent to pay for itself,,. Well don't look now but try negative 15% GDP,,. Remember old Bush, "read my lips",,!!
In today's virus bailout news Speaker of the House, Polosi, was quoted as saying that she was working on another bailout bill. This one would be three trillion dollars and would be split between state and local governments and the country's needy residents (note that I didn't say "citizens"). She wants to see it passed by this Friday. Whereupon it will head for the Senate and they will likely want to go "double or nothing". I imagine that Trump will want to jump on this bailout bandwagon, too.

One more comment regarding the latest bailout idea: The Democratic proposed virus bailout bill has 1800 pages and will be submitted to the House today. They plan on voting on it on Friday. How many of you could read 1800 pages of legalize and understand what it means in just two or three days? And the interesting thing is that I heard that no one really knows who wrote the law and who was involved in its creation, other than the Speaker and her closest friends, I assume. Like the politicians always say: "Never let a good crisis go to waste".

Looks like the Aussies have their own brand of crazy stupid religious nuts too. And Trump is listening.
Doesn't he have anything better to do?

Keep an eye out. That US-based church is world-wide spreading who knows what and has been in FDA/TGA type trouble before. Certainly the Aussie branch has been implicated previously.
And the interesting thing is that I heard that no one really knows who wrote the law and who was involved in its creation, other than the Speaker and her closest friends, I assume.
By the same token it seems unlikely that just Nancy and her closest friends could have written all of the 1800 pages of legalese, despite your assumption.
Unless your assumption is that only Nancy and crew knows who wrote it, not that they wrote it. Confusion noted.

Obviously, I have no idea who wrote the bill. However, I am sure that Nancy knows who did and likely provided some general guidance. I just wish that the public and Congress would be provided a list of every sponsor, group and people who helped write every proposed law. It is usually relatively easy to figure out who helped write most Democratic bills as they typically have connections to labor unions, non-profit groups and the like. However, Republican bills are a lot harder to figure out and you would really have to dig hard into the proposed law to understand who is going to get the taxpayers' money. Although I will admit that usually it takes years after the law is passed before we find out on whom the chips finally fell.

Trump administration officials are questioning if the death toll from the Covid-19 coronavirus is inflated a day after Dr. Anthony Fauci testified to congress that the number is likely higher. Watch Fox news going after Fauci,,,these are the same guys that claimed the virus was a hoax,,.
There's going to be a few other folks crying in the media in a few weeks when they find out the hard way that C19 isnt a hoax,,. There was some fairly positive data points coming out this week in many(not all)of the states, lower death tolls, lower case counts and much lower hospital cases, its really so sad that messaging & planning at the top has been so inadequate,,!!
When they say "Wild West",,, I always thought they were referring to the 1800's,,!!
Look, I realise that this clip is a bit tangential, but this came to mind when I was thinking of how Trump pushes one after another expert into the fray, lets them get burned (maybe from an ultraviolet or otherwise tremendous light) or bashed by the media for trying to defend his stupid ideas and then Trump reaches back for another expert and pushes them to the fore. Temporarily of course.
Please excuse the fact that Bruce Lee is of Asian descent. That's just a coincidence. He is just an invincible crisis for these dummies in this scene. Its a classic cheesy genre scene I haven't seen for likely 40 years..
Trump has continued to promote hydroxychloroquine without reservation while attacking those who question its effectiveness. He has described Bright as a “disgruntled employee” who is resisting the proposed treatment without cause.
“So we have had some great response, in terms of doctors writing letters and people calling on the hydroxychloroquine,” Trump told reporters Thursday. “And this guy is fighting it. There’s no reason to fight it. There’s no reason. But more importantly than that, we’ve had tremendous response to the hydroxy.”
But doctors, health experts and officials from Trump’s own administration say the evidence does not back up the president’s positive assertions. Those assertions, which Trump has claimed are partly based on “a feeling,” could be costing lives, they said.
That's a nasty question. And so is your newspaper. No. You there, in back. Go ahead, please.
Mr Trump you're doing such a great job.
Thank you, we're doing great.
You're doing such a great job and why is it that the testing is a problem?
The testing is great, just great. Beautiful, like the phone call. Perfect. I don't like it though, the testing. I think we're doing too much testing and the cases. The cases, they're skyrocketing and, but we're still beating Russia. Putin is trying but we have Michigan coming on board, those patriots are getting sick and they're working and we're working and they fought or met or asked at the Legislature, they said 'We want to work' and they do, and they are and now they're getting sick and we're blocking Russia. Blocking them. They had 10,000 cases today. Did you know? 10,000 cases and I knew before anybody and I knew we had to block them. We're number ONE, but Putin is closing but I don't like the tests.
I wanna stop the tests because they are too good. A person takes the test and then somehow its a positive?!?!. They should have used a mask for the test or stayed away, but we need the numbers to beat Russia but Tony says the numbers are bad, but they take the test and somehow, in between or before, they somehow get a positive but I don't know why? I don't know why they got the positive or got the test but they did. And I'm a super brain. I GEDDIT, I know this stuff. But we're winning and the skyrocketing is under control and it goes up, but around 4th of July its down and we're open but still beating Russia, and we're flattening the curve by skyrocketing down.
The marks are good, we have great marks or I have great marks. I'm the President but we're all great, nearly as much as me. But come 4th of July with the heat and the fireworks and the lights - all kinds, colours and loud, very loud fireworks and have you seen them, they're great - and the flattening of the skyrocket after or near 4th of July and we'll get there. And they had the signs up in Michigan and the haircuts, they're opening up there I see. Is that a mosquito?
And we've passed a million and a half now, but only because of the tests. The tests are bad, and I don't think we need them. OBAMAGATE. OBAMA-gate. We could have beaten this, and we are beating this, this VY-RUS. Its from CHIINA, and we're beating this but OBAMAGAte. They were bad, very bad people. I knew the virus was coming two, three years ago. I said that, didn't I Mike? I said that maybe 8 years ago. I said "Mr Obama. Mr Barrack Hussein O-BAH-MA. I said. I said Mr Obama there is a virus and you should put some masks away and get the tests ready". And this was only a few months or years ago. And the cupboard was bare. That's not OUR fault. We didn't know or see the virus coming but I told Mr Obama that there was a virus coming but we didn't or I didn't know, And so I left the cupboard bare and even Jared had a look. About a year or maybe two ago he had a look and it was still bare. I took Ivanka in there too, but there was only one chair so we shared it. I said you can sit on my lap in the cupboard - or room, might have been a room, maybe was, might have been a room or maybe off the side of the hall - No tests. She's so totally HAHT, I might have dated her if she wasn't, you know...But this virus, Obama should have put some things in the cupboard. Masks, tests, but they're bad people, they didn't even know the virus was coming. Very bad.
Phillip,,. I didn't notice this earlier, so thought I would comment,. Yes Canada is not exempt, like every where else in the world, C19 seems to have manifested itself in the higher populated areas and Montreal is an international hub well connected to Europe and some of the highly populated US states,,. Vancouver and Toronto are both connected with frequent travel to and from China,,. We didnt have the travel ban as early as the US did and our early checking at the airports was lacking & late,,. Like everywhere else we have dropped the ball on the Old folks and there Staff at the extended care facilities,,.
Our Politicians & Health officials are generaly highly regarded and cooperation with there response direction has been followed quite well with no dissension that Im aware of,,. Out west we have had comparitively small numbers at least so far and yet we are cautious with re-opening plans,,.

Norman is a physician and journalist a bit like Dr Michael Moseley from the BBC, though not as prolific as Dr Moseley.
As an aside Dr Karl Kruszelnicki is another Aussie medico/scientist/journo who hosts radio and TV science talkback shows and has written dozens of lighthearted but well researched books. "Great Moments in Science" is one series. He was once asked by a listener who was an operating theatre nurse about the chances of a (cut open) patient catching anything from a fart emitted by any of the theatre staff.
Relax, the chances are low. Dr Karl co-opted his then 5 year-old son into farting onto an agar petri dish and they created the world's first 'Fartograph'.

Well it's not mystifying, America has hit rock bottom. There are enough people in this country that make the election of a buffoon not only a possibility but a certainty.
Not enough caring people vote. So we get stuck with a real gem.
What's interesting is that on this Forum there are people from Aus that question his presence in White House as many Americansdo.
On another motorcycle forum there are many folks from Aus that think he's a treasure and look up to him.
That Obamagate crap? Trump is always setting up someone to be the scapegoat. Back when he was wooing Kim of N Korea Trump was asked what would happen if the talks didn't pan out. His reply was, Then I'll blame someone else.
i find it totally weird that so many Trump followers apparently can't understand what he says. They must be mesmerized by the sound of his voice.
Its from New Zealand where they have done a spectacularly great job in this COVID-19 pandemic. Their numbers* (absolute and relative) are low and they implemented fast and hard lockdown measures to contain the spread and 'flatten the curve'. It hurt, but like a bandaid being ripped off, the pain doesn't last as long that way.
If you don't want to read the whole article: New Zealand is easing restrictions including cafes and restaurants where seating numbers are reduced. The leader of the country drops by a local eatery (no bullet proof limos convoy, no army of men in suits, nobody shunted away). Because of her government's own rules the manager says 'we're full' and she and her husband were turned away at the door. They were allowed in soon after when a space opened up. Common courtesy and no favouritism.
This shows a country, a people and a leader all working together for a common goal. And you know what? It works better that way. My vote for president of the world goes to Jacinda. New Zealand and Prime Minister Ardern rock.
.....Trump is always setting up someone to be the scapegoat. ..... I'll blame someone else.....
Who?
W.H.O.
CHIIINA
Hilary
Fauci
The tests - too many
Dis-IN-FEC-tant - "I never said that. I was being sarcastic". Who said that? not me.
Wuhan Lab
The sniffles, I blame the sniffles. Maybe its just the 'flu. Maybe it isn't. Could be, might be the flu - nobody dies of that, right? Its just the 'flu. NobARDy.
Cold weather - "And then, like a miracle in April it disappears".
Masks - "I'm not wearing one".
The tests - not enough of them. OH-BAH-Ma. Obama's fault. He should'a had a test for something that didn't exist. Obama.
Governors - especially that woman and the guy with low polls. "did you see his numbers? They're bad, and mine are great"
The press. Fake noos media, spreading the word how bad he is and hiding the virus in the copy. I like FOX. FOX likes me . Foxy foxy foxy foxy. Ivanka is HaHT.
Dr Birx. Stoopid idea about the light. She must have made that up. "I have a very big, you know... bing bing bing".
Masks - too many, or not enough. Either way. Try the scarf I say. Just try it. MAybe it will help.
Dr Rick Bright. Maybe HYDROXY doesn't work, but I said it will - so make it. Make IT SO, or else YOU'RE FIRED. You're fired - bing bing bing.
Obama. Barak Hussein OBAMA. He did it.
If there are Trump enthusiasts, let them explain how this is a hoax and how everything the Pres says and does is good.
I like to read the rational behind it. On the other forum those that are for the man just repeat what the hear on One America and Fox news. Of course that is unbiased journalism.
... from New Zealand where they have done a spectacularly great job in this COVID-19 pandemic.
That's the point: smart leaders/prime ministers side by side with doctors/scientists, unfortunately this didn't happen everywhere. Response in Europe hasn't been so good, in the early days, countries here didn't agreed for a common purpose, I remember when it was called "pizza virus"...
Comiing back to N.Z., they've been smart, and also lucky, they have the ocean all around, hefe we have many other countries, and closing borders has been difficult. Not to talk about people density in urban areas
