In San Francisco's virus news is was reported today that the city's school district plans to give all of their students "A" grades in recognition of them not being able to attend school during the lock-down. But will they have learned what was to be taught in those classes, or is this just a "progressive" way of not making students feel bad about not being able to attend school and their teachers not knowing how to teach via Zoom?
Somehow I missed this one. Finals week ended at University of North Georgia last week. I got an A in a linguistics course, with a numeric grade of 122. Somehow, I suspect the linguistics instructor was not a math major.

Speaking of linguistics: My youngest granddaughter is majoring in linguistics at UC Santa Cruz. She is finishing her sophomore year via Zoom right now, after being kicked out of her dorm and sent home at the end of the winter quarter due to the virus scare.
You don't want this kid in your class as she gets nothing less than an "A" in every class that she attends and usually is awarded an "A+" in most of her courses. A really dedicated student - who has no social life (or even any friends) at all. Needless to say she is not happy about the University's plan to offer a "pass or fail" grading system this quarter and perhaps in the future. I might add that she is taking 20 units a quarter and is on her way to graduating after only three years in school. Of course, what she does after graduating with a degree in linguistics is a real question.
Her sister graduated from UCLA with honors also in three years, the last year studying in Berlin while taking classes with German students as she said that taking her courses in English was too easy. She majored in "comparative literature", comparing German literature with English literature. She is now spending her days locked in her room writing fiction stories and posting them on the internet. No chance of getting the virus for her - and no chance of getting a job, either.
It is just good luck for both kids that they had a home to return to and a mother who feeds and takes care of them - and may end up doing so for the rest of her life.

I hear that being home alone is no longer a thing in Wisconsin. Happy Hour has arrived. Now we get to see who wins, COVID-19 or booze and chips. This is a perfect real-world test of the advantages of being locked in your home during the pandemic vs going out and having a good time with your friends.

Really smart student. What to do with the education? Went to work with her uncle for the IRS in Tulsa, Ok. They gave her a hand full of pencils and note pad and said go get them.
That didn't last long. Back at University she took Pharmaceutical classes, got her Doctorate of Pharmacy in a year. Then job shopping she would get calls from various companies at all hours of the day. She thought to her self, "Are they going to expect me to be available at these hours?" Well that line of work didn't last long either. I think she's between careers now. Lives with her best friend, her aging Mom with few friends but dog and cat.
Makes you wonder why some folks get all the education and then don't career in the given study area. Or take a study subject that has no employable benefits.
I think I mentioned on another forum that the benefits of Covid19, or Covfefe45 as it is also known are multiple.
Social Security will be in the black again.
There will be plenty of job openings
There will be a surplus of available housing.
What could go wrong?
I make peanut butter and jelly burritos for lunch some times.
I bet there is a law against that in Mexico.
