It is a shame to see how the LG/GM battery issue is hurting GM. GM was already playing a game of trying to appear committed to EVs while not investing enough and being agile enough to keep up. When the Bolt came to market, it was a real step forward in range and performance. And in an arguably nice package. However, as other automakers have continued to progress, GM just gave the Bolt a mild refresh and half-baked SUV.

In the interim, Hyundai, Tesla, VW and Ford have continued to develop and improve at a quick pace. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 appears to be a real nice package. The Ford Mustang appears to be a hit (though I still cannot get past it being called a 'Mustang'). The Ford electric pickup appears very promising and Rivian just started shipping their stunner of a pickup. The VWs appear to be mainstream designs that can convert the traditional combustion crowd - kind of what the Bolt aimed for.

GM, in the meantime, is stuck struggling with LG on a Bolt platform that is otherwise good but in need of a strong refresh and Hummer which appears in CG only and a staggering price of around $112K - for whenever it comes to market. GM played with the EV1 and faded too. They are going from thought leadership to laggard again very quickly. This market is changing quickly, especially in Europe, and they need to right the ship quickly.

Edit - just to add how quickly the market is changing, this was in my news feed after i posted the above:

Speaking of electric vehicle batteries, like the ones that GM will need to dispose of: Here is some interesting news regarding Ford and Redwood Materials building a facility to recycle EV batteries. Let's hope more manufacturers establish recycling programs besides Ford. This is something that must be done if electric vehicles are not to result in both landfill pollution and the problems associated with mining lithium and other battery materials. In addition, I hope that someone also establishes a recycling plant that will recycle all types of lithium batteries and not just ones sold by Ford or another automotive brand.
