I just returned from a visit to a local Triumph/Ducati/Vespa dealership. They had a lot of new inventory in the shop at prices that made my eyes water. They also had a number of used bikes parked in the street and every one had an asking price plus a "handling fee" of $595. The asking prices were pretty close to the cost of the new bike when they were originally sold. One bike that I saw was a 2015 Honda VFR for $8,500 USD plus the $595 handling fee. Attached is a photo of the inside of the shop showing the new bikes. In the far end is the parts/service department with a sign on the right post that said Labor Rate: $86 per half hour. My daughter asked what a "major service" would cost for her 2005 Triumph Bonneville T-100 and was told it would be over $1,200. Most of that cost is for labor.

Yowza! Hard to believe that price point is competitive but they wouldn't be in business if people weren't buying. Makes me glad I can do most of my own work!

Thats £64 a half hour, or if the usual $ to £ rate is applied £86.
Top end BMW charges in the uk but at those sort of prices (in the uk) the showroom would be quiet. Most independent dealers are in the £80 an hour braket or a fixed price for the job.
I had the fork seals replaced recently along with a brake fluid change for just under £200.
"Handling charges" applied to the buyer here are very unusual.

service cost is a bit eye=watering indeed at $1200. I remember many years ago expressing shock at the annual service cost of the F8. The service writer, who was a great guy, said, "most of the time, consider yourself lucky to get out our door at less than $600." That was very different from my Suzuki experience where dealer service was much less costly and most maintenance could be done by the owner.

BTW, before we left the shop, the salesman told us that they were buying used motorcycles for cash, should we be inclined to sell one of ours.

    Well, “That’s California for you.”

Used motorcycle/ATV/SxS prices have one insane along with automobile and home prices. But California was insane before going wildly insane. Observed a KTM I could buy for $9000 out the door here was $12,500 at Malcolm Smith’s place in 2010. Or even Chaparral.

Before I purchased my 2014 F800GT from a private seller last year, I thought about buying a new KTM 390 Adventure, which had a MSRP of $6199. I went to multiple dealers and all of them wanted to tack on all sorts of extra fees which got the out the door price including tax and license to about $9300, so about a 50% cost over MSRP. I've never paid an out the door price greater than the MSRP price in all the years, 30+, that I've been buying new bikes from dealers. When I asked why their prices were so high I was told that the new bikes they have on the showroom floor might be the last ones they get for awhile because of the supply chain problems going on right now. In fact most of the bikes that I've seen at the dealerships right now are mostly used bikes. Now is not a good time to be buying a new bike unless you don't mind paying a lot over MSRP. As for paying the chimps at the dealerships to work on my bikes, not a chance. Even if they would do the work for free, much less when they charge $150 hour to break 2 things for every one they're being paid to fix.

Richard230, I have a Victory Red 2014 VFR800f Interceptor in showroom condition with 2830 miles on it that I will sell you for the same $8500. I'll include the $1000 set of color-matched, key-matched OEM panniers, and waive the $595 handling fee. I can do this because my overhead is, well, zero.

The dealers I've talked to (in and near Durham, NC) can't get inventory, so they ration demand by raising price.

Same with the auto dealers I have spoken with.

Sucks, but these fundamentally nonessential purchases. I want a new truck, but I’ll keep fixing my Volvo until prices come back down. Fixing it myself with junkyard parts if my mechanic raises rates. But have you seen the price of gas and beef lately, now that is annoying.

Hey everyone, I have a bike I could use some help with as I'm not familiar. My father was original owner of a 1978 Husky 250 WR with less than 600 original miles on it. Bike has sat in the garage for 22 years but getting a full service now. All original, still with leather covers on handles, tires, etc. Anyone know what it's worth may be? Thanks in advance.

This isn't quite the right place to query about classic Husqvarnas as the brand has been owned by several prior to BMW's brief ownership.

Gut feel right off is that motorcycle is worth no less than $4,000. It might be worth $12,000 to the right buyer as it is not only in excellent condition but it is in ORIGINAL condition. An older restored 360 is said to have brought $21,000.

Don't try to fix it. Don't do anything more than hand wash with soap and water. Is worth more to the buyer to see it untouched.

I would start by contacting some of the specialists providing parts for vintage Husqvarna. They are a terrible business to be in unless you love Husqvarna, so they will know values and who is buying. I don't know any of these but they look like the kinds of places I would call and talk to:

"This isn't quite the right place" isn't saying you were wrong, just that it isn't the optimal place. But maybe we can get you pointed the right direction. You have a rare motorcycle that appears to be in extraordinary condition that might best sell in a collector's auction.

    LckyNmbr7,
If you can get the Husky listed for auction on Bring-a-trailer dot com, you might get a premium price for it. BAT seems to be a good place for sellers, if not necessarily for buyers. Note that BAT is popular because they curate what they sell, and give you very good suggestions on how to photograph and describe the bike. They are heavily over-subscribed, but yours is the kind of bike they might be looking for. Best of luck.
