Here is the photo of the F650GS single factory valve adjusting tool for your edification. You do not need this tool to adjust the valves on the F650GS single, if you don't mind removing the camshafts to get to the shims. But you need this tool to adjust the valves without removing the cams. I don't know how it works - and I am not sure that I want to. But it gives you an idea of what the German mind can accomplish to save a few minutes in the shop.

In any case, the shims on the single very rarely need to be replaced due to the valve lash getting beyond factory specifications.

Ah!, did a check and replaced shims on my F650ST a while back.
No idea how the tool worked, had to take off the cams, not for the faint hearted. the only essential tool is a modified bolt which locks the crank in a fixed place. Valve clearance usually gets smaller as the valve slowly grinds itself into the seat, so essential to check every, say 12,000 miles!
You can check without removing the cams, Cams need removing if a different shim is needed. shims are easy to find.
Remember to calculate several times to make sure you buy a smaller shim of the gap is smaller, a bigger shim if the gap is bigger. -revers of what it seems. and on:

Needs a vernier gauge and metric spanners, I made the lock bold out of a stainelness bolt, details on the F650.co.uk website.
