Park Ranger. I work mostly in a museum. I collect old things and too many motorcycles. I just got a 1964 Honda trail 90. Why? I don't really know. I race vintage bikes and my wife likes to passenger racing sidecars.

Hi, I am new to the forum and this has really been a fascinating thread. Am a pastry chef by trade. Have had my bike for less than a year. Its so much fun riding into work each morning(i start b4 the rush hour). Cannot wish for a better start to the day. Don't miss the feeling of being a tinned sardine from the days of travelling by tube. Best of all, i like my rides into the country for a few hours every weekend to get the yin and the yang in balance

I can't believe I've been subscribing to this forum for so long and still haven't contributed to this fascinating thread.

I'm a research chemist working in industry.

What really interests me is how many of the posters on this thread are professional people. What does that say? That bikes are not cheap transport any more? Or that people perceive BMWs to be rich people's toys?

Actually after years of paying exhorbitant BMW service costs I think I've finally found a bike which may beat jap iron for running costs (so far).

Pete, that's one of the reasons we bought the F800, we were sick of the high servicing costs of our Suzukis and when comparing other brands the BMW servicing costs were much cheaper ( and the ST was better looking

I work as a Floodplain Consultant. I retired from the City of Houston as their Floodplain Manager for ten long years (Tropical Storm Allison, 47,000 flooded structures with only about 6,000 structures in the Floodplain with Flood Insurance). Houston Texas is very flat and every time it rains, something or someone gets flooded/wet. I have been in Floodplain Management for 20 years. I also help people with their insurance claims as very few people know what do to when they have a loss (auto, home,slip and falls and product liability). You would be suprised how many people get hurt from simple things as an elevator door or a two liter soft drink bottle (caps flying off at 200 miles an hour). As an insurance adjuster for many years, I handled all kinds of claims. If any of you ever need an insurance question answered or need any help, please feel free to contact me as I help people in need. Most insurance companies are hard to deal with as their main goal is to save money on claims instead of making people whole again as they should be doing (indemnify means to make whole again after a loss, as insurance policies are policies of indemnification). I work as a Focus Puller or a 1st AC as the Americans will call me. I live in North West London, originally from Wales. I work on anything that pays, from feature films to commercials, and everything in between.

I ride an F800R, which I love, this is my second bike, having moved on from a Kawasaki ER-5, so I'm still with the parallel twins. I'm married, with two girls, one five years and one six months.

Before starting in the film industry I trained as a motor mechanic, so I do all my own car and bike maintenance, I started riding in the year 2000, but I still feel so new in the motorbiking world.

For the last 15 years I've written advertising copy and done conceptual development (print, TV radio, online), freelance, in Southeast Asia and Toronto. Before that, I was a deckhand on a 100-year-old 35m classic gaff-ketch called Cariad. Before that, was travelling for 5 years (S Pacific, SE Asia, Indochina, Central America, aged 28-34) till I ran out of money in Singapore; got into writing copy there when a British ad superstar took pity on me and showed me how to be creative with words without training or education. Before the travel, I was a sales executive selling Steelcase cubicles and other office furniture, design and space planning in Toronto -- saved up a big pile of cash and then took off (the money lasted five years). Before that, I sold leather accessories wholesale for Niekamper. Before that, I was a construction labourer in Vancouver BC and Central Alberta, building high-rises and malls. Before that I worked for Nowsco Oil Well Service in Red Deer Alberta, driving a Kenworth acid truck, interesting gig that saw us drive to remote oil wells to pump hydrochloric acid into them at high pressures in order to clean the wax and gunk out of the oil-bearing rock formations in hopes of getting the wells producing again. Before that I worked seismic as a jughound, planting geophones in the hunt for oil and gas, based out of Calgary. Before that I was in Grade 12, failing badly, and thus never quite finished school.

After several Suzukis my reason for switching to BMW was nothing to do with service costs. In the UK the rubbish finish on Suzukis means they can go from 0 to rust heap in a couple of winters.

I have also pushed into a new realm, autism, lately with the creation of an event called The Autists, here in Toronto -- www.theautists.com. The idea is to enable people of all ages with autism/Asperger's and a gift -- be it in art, math, engineering, architecture, memory, language, etc. -- to monetize that gift, by either selling its fruits at our event, or by connecting with people and organizations who might need their skills but would otherwise not be able to find them. Not all of my sentences are that long.

The Autists event will be a one-evening event May 2, 2010, with art by autistic artists and regular crazy ones up for auction, hence the name, concerts by prodigious musical savants, and lots of great food and booze. It's a co-prod between my company and the Geneva Centre for Autism.

Quite honestly, this is about the most satisfying, least selfish, thing I've ever done. If you're in Toronto and/or have an autistic person close to you, you don't want to miss this bash.

Cannot believe I have not seen this thread till today, very interesting group of people with simular interests, so it seems.
Me, I run the maintenance department for a small charter airline, we operate 10 737's (mostly older -200 but -400's too). We takem apart and put them back together again about once every two years or so, so work is steady but the company sucks. One owner and his and my name are not the same, so no future. I have been here since 2000 and survived the 911 cutbacks, the NHL Lock out and Katrina's fuel spike.
We used to fly for 10 NHL teams, and used to fly as the mechanic for the Sabres and the Penguins, those were some good times.....
Looking to switch industries, something outside of aviation, after 18 years it just is not what it used to be.....

No really, I can, and have been doing it for many years.

Registered Master Electrician here. Been doing it since childhood under my father and never looked back.

Great career. Always thinking, analyzing, trouble shooting, problem solving, anticipating, refining motor skills, strategizing, using all kinds of tools, new challenges, good exercise, and oh yeah, it pays well too.

I believe this is why riding a bike came "naturally" for me. Same type of skillset to a degree.

More people should get into the trades. With the new gen of kids growing up and more inclined to computer related careers, the up-and-comers who wish to get into the trades will be making lots of money as fewer people are taking it up.

I live in Switzerland, but work for several companies in the Mid-East (Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi) undertaking contracts in places such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, etc. I do the on-site management and control for projects including security (survey, supply, installation, etc), medical (survey, supply, construction, installation, etc) and transportation (all sorts). Been in the game for about 10 years. Back in the 90s I was with United Nations Peacekeeping for a few years, and from the 70s to the early 90s I was with my military and then my government.
Now that it's winter it's time to put the bikes to bed, kiss the wife goodbye and get back out there while it's too cold for the bad guys to make too much trouble.

You didn't happen to know Bob Adolph when you did the UN thing did you? He was a former student of mine. Unfortunately, he was in charge of security when the UN HQ in Baghdad was blown up in the summer of 2003.

No, never met Mr Adolph. Don't envy him his job out there at that time. Rumour is the big boss of the UN in Baghdad had a whole lot of security removed from the in-road 'to make the UN more accessible to the citizens'. A few days later some of those citizens drove a bloody great explosives truck down the in-road. The rest is history.

Aw jealous. I trained to become a Canoeing Instructor but the local authority pulled the plug on the programme they were due to run where I was to be employed

Passed my test and never used it again but I've been getting pangs to start again as the Olympic Canoeing Centre is currently being built right on my doorstep and the craving is getting a bit too much to ignore.

I later became a sailing instructor which I enjoyed but my full-time career (a better paid and warmer one at that) took over and again I've not used the skills I learnt.
