Here are a couple of short videos of a silent movie that are well worth watching. The show Rudge motorcycles being built sometime during the 1920's. Not a lot of safety equipment, like gloves or overalls, were worn by workers back then. It looked like it might have been kind of noisy in that factory, too. No wonder it is a silent movie. lol The Rudge motorcycle seemed to have some modern features, even if their design would receive some polishing in the future, like mechanically-linked brakes and a 4-valve head with two spark plugs. The end of part 2 shows some interesting commercial uses for motorcycles back then:

Reminds me of working with a English machinist friend in his garage with the lathe and mill. The shot of the guys in the lab with the vials and beakers, Lucas dealt in Black Art of Alchemy to make it's electrics work.

Anybody else think the broach operator in the first film is a woman? I served my turner/fitter apprenticeship in the 1980s, I've never worked on an engineering shop floor that had women on the tools I was thinking that must have been very progressive for the time. The last engineering firm I worked at was a tool makers and the owner openly banned women form the shop floor, when informed that was illegal his response was "don't care. It would put the men of the job".

I can smell the cutting oil from those gear hobbers as I type.
