I just saw the team New Zealand wipe out on the evening news. Yikes! They went end over end, usually the wipe out is side to side. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The wind was gusting to 50 knots.

Nowhere near 50 knots the regatta has very clear wind rules. Ian Murray (a kiwi) is the PRO.

Murray produced the wind readings from on board the committee boat, which showed in the 10 seconds leading up to Team NZ's terrifying capsize the wind speed was at 21.7 knots - well within the agreed upon wind limit of 24 knots.

There is a clear formula in place for calculating the wind speed is based on a rolling 30-second average during a five-minute sampling period before the start. Murray, who also headed America's Cup Race Management at the last event in San Francisco, said this rule was put in place at his insistence.
"I have to be governed by black and white rules on things like wind limits. I wasn't prepared to go into this competition with the chatter that came out of AC34 with calling off in light winds, in heavy winds and being accused of ruining people's Cups. So for me, it's a black and white decision," said Murray.
"I have campaigned in discussions with all teams, for the last two years to lower the wind limit. Finally on June 2 [2016], I changed the protocol with their unanimous agreement to the rules are now.
"The big change of what I recommended was we went from a one-minute average to a 30-second average and we added a sampling period, rather than whatever the wind is at three minutes to the start, where it was just bang one shot at the dartboard."
The regatta director has the ability to call racing off if he believes the crew's safety is at risk, but Murray said this threshold was not met yesterday.
He added that ultimately, the decision to participate in a race, or continue racing rests with the teams themselves.

Once the race starts there is no upper limit but TNZ had not started so it was below 24 knots.

Not that it mattered we've all pitch poled at sometime in a boat it's only these stupid wings and stupid rules that make it such a big deal. IMHO all part of the Oracle cheating that's going on. The wind will be lighter for the cup and by then the challengers will have had multiple breakages. BAR lost two races in a first to five as they were not at the start due to boat problems. That's not fair and another reason why....

    IT'S BORING!!!

Win the start and win the race! Unless your boat is fast (and ours is) the chances of coming from behind are slim, ALL the overtakes so far has been because the lead boat made a mistake and with a stupidly short 15-20min race one mistake you loose.

Of course loosing the driver does not help, but I think all teams have had a man overboard at sometime I know Blair has done it in practise down here, Nathan in todays' third race and Mr Loud Mouth in practise as well.

And then good old Dean buckled under pressure again loosing from a 3-1 lead, thank god we got rid of the 44 year old has been.

    From the UK Guardian..

The New Zealand team held a 3-1 lead before Thursday’s races, and secured a 5-2 overall victory to end Ainslie’s dream of “bringing the America’s Cup back to Britain”. The New Zealand boat had capsized on Tuesday, with Wednesday’s four!!! scheduled races then postponed due to high winds in Bermuda

So if TNZ had not been able to repair their boat and there was not a days postponement BAR would have won by default, if they just sailed around the course on their own four times.

And in the other draw Japan would have lost 4-1 if the last days racing was called off.

So in the actual cup if either boats has a big accident that's it game over.

The challengers final could be all over in two days!

You may be able to watch it on Prime TV from NZ (not live) as Sky TV who own them have come under great pressure to show it for free. It will be 1.5 hours delayed but on the web on their catch-up web site (I hope).

http://www.skygo.co.nz/catchup/channels/prime I signed up (use [email protected] so they don't spam you - I'll let you lookup mailinator.com)

For those in Aus. it seems to not work (I use the work's VPN so appear to be in the USA). So for those in Aus. you need find an open proxy in USA or NZ. I might be back with more Sunday as our VPN is really slow.

Fingers Crossed it works and they put the cup on catch-up.

    Stay Tuned......

These races have not been very competitive. New Zealand has a huge lead on leg 4 of 7 in race 4. The winds are pretty lite. The winds at the US Open golf tournament are much higher. New Zealand is 1/2 mile ahead on leg 6. Oracle will have 5 days to find some speed. New Zealand wins race 4 to take a 3-0 lead. 7 points to win the AC.

I expect Mr Loud Mouth will win one we just need light winds next weekend.

A five day break - WTF why? Oh yeah that's right who said the Cup was fair?

My conspiracy theory just thought up today over breakfast.

Who did Mr Loud Mouth belittle last time around. Who is now effectively his training partner? -- Just saying

Team USA has made 3 mistakes, 2 penalties and once coming off their foils. USA looks to have gained some speed, but have made the boat a little harder to sail. New Zealand wins race 5 to take a 4-0 lead.

USA finally leads at mark 1. USA leads at mark 2. New Zealand passes and takes a small lead at the start of leg 5. Best race by far. USA back in lead at start of leg 6. USA wins. New Zealand leads 4-1. Great race!

Looks like I need to think about booking a flight back to Auckland to welcome the cup home.

And then this circus can be bought back to being what it's supposed to be a match race between yacht clubs.

By Bye Oracle and First Bank.

The first rule that TNZ will bring back is the sailing team has to from the country they are sailing for. We have one Aussie, how many Americans or Japanese on the two Oracle boats?

Russell is also already looking at an escape route from Oracle, rumour is he's talking with https://www.alinghi.com/

Couldn't have said this better myself...

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/94071227/americas-cup-legend-bruno-trouble-ready-to-head-to-auckland-if-team-nz-win

He chose not to go to Bermuda for this edition of the Cup, making no secret of his disappointment at Oracle's seven-year reign, under the leadership of New Zealander Sir Russell Coutts. Troublé claimed they had "killed the style and elegance" of the regatta: "What we have now is a vulgar beach event smelling of sunscreen and French fries," he declared two years ago.

While Trouble admits he has enjoyed the "extraordinary sport" in Bermuda this past month, watching on French television from the comfort of his home, he believes New Zealand must wrest the Cup off Oracle to bring to an end an era of what he calls "video game" sailing.
"What we are seeing here isn't exactly sailing, the way we love it. The way the Kiwis are sailing their catamaran is closer to a video game. I think those boats are semi-dangerous, and with the stronger winds in Auckland, they will be dangerous," he says.

    ....

"It was a big mistake in 2000 not to have a strict nationality rule; I told that to Peter Blake then. This is why you lost the Cup in 2003, when the mercenaries left Team NZ. It was a terrible move not to do that," he says.

Thank god the circus is now over. As Grant Dalton said pumping oil is not sailing.

Luna Rossa have challenged the RYNS (it is a race between yacht clubs) for the next event. Grant has said he will not cheat* and if somebody wins it fair and square then they deserve to win it.

*Cheating (why so many clubs pulled out this time)
Oracle could launch their boat 4 years before the challengers who had 4 months.
Changing the rules after most teams had started building their boats and/or had done all the development work.
Having a 5 day break in the middle of the contest - just in case they were not leading
Sailing in the challengers series so they could measure their performance against the challengers (ever wondered why they won that? The challengers were not stupid).
Giving a point into the Cup of the winner of the challengers series.
Allowing "stored energy" - because we didn't do that in 2013 - honest.

    I'm sure there are more......

My prediction? There will soon be announced an "Oracle Series" because that's what the sailing world needs another boat class.

Looking forward to fours years time I'll be back in NZ by then (I retire) might need to buy an apartment on the waterfront?

Congratulations to team New Zealand for winning back the AC. I hope they, at the very least, will arrange for streaming of the next Cup. I love the event but refuse to pay for watching. Go New Zealand!

I expect they will ask the Govt. for money like they did the last time we hosted it and part of the deal is free to air TV.

Can't promise that's free internet streaming have a look see if you can get to TVNZ streaming service:- https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/spor...=5484362744001

Just for you don't say we're not helpful down here:- http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/94219577/team-new-zealand-want-to-return-americas-cup-to-freetoair-television

Team New Zealand want to return America's Cup to free-to-air television

Although I do like this bit from our Italian friend..

He believed the current technology race had become so far advanced that organisers had to be careful not to scare off new syndicates as they look to increase the small numbers in San Francisco and Bermuda.

"If catamarans remain, we should ask this question: Why a new team would join the Cup with rivals that are already five years ahead in the boat development?"

It was then suggested that was the right of the holders - that they didn't necessarily have to care about the challengers.

"Americans would probably act like that. We will do the right thing for the America's Cup," he finished.

And you might not know, but when it was last held down here first time there was 11 yes ELEVEN challengers. All races were match races and everybody races everybody else twice in the challenger series in RR1 and then there were quarter and semi finals the "event" took about 2 months all free to watch on TV. TNZ were not in that series they only sailed in the Cup, best to ~5 from memory and like most Cups the the challenger scored ZERO

Next time there are about 8 challengers Alinghi beat us 5-0 - that's how the Cup should be.

How the New York Yacht Club did it for years.

New Zealand and challenger of record Luna Rosa have announced that the next AC will be contested in monohulls. More details are upcoming.

PS Designers are working on foiling monohulls. It willbe interesting to see how high tech they go.

    High flyers, these ones.
Same "standard" foils on all boats.

    Expect 50 knots, seriously quick.
All the tech stuff is downstairs, out of sight. Will we ever know how a boats advantage was gained?

I like the shape of the NZ boat. Sleak and smooth, and everything you need for good hydrodynamics and aerodynamics.
